Our Story
Ballet Counterpointe was born out of founder and director Kevin Jenkins’ lifelong love for both the San Diego area and the beauty of dance. As a San Diego native, Kevin grew up dancing in southern California and experienced firsthand the dearth of resources and opportunities available to local dancers. After establishing a prolific and celebrated career as a choreographer on the national stage, Kevin has returned to his San Diego roots with the mission of bringing high art and performance opportunities to his hometown.
The Endeavors.
The 2022-23 season is Ballet Counterpointe’s first full-length season of programming. The company boasts a talented ensemble of 18 dancers, led by founder and artistic director Kevin Jenkins, and puts on public performances throughout the San Diego area. Because one of Ballet Counterpointe’s main goals is to increase the quality of dance education and opportunities for young artists in the San Diego area, the company is also active in community outreach events, open classes, and educational events.
The Mission.
Every rehearsal, staff meeting, and workday at Ballet Counterpointe is guided by the same mission statement: “Enriching art locally, elevating dance nationally.” We are truly a family, all passionate about and dedicated to the goal of making high art accessible to the San Diego community. San Diego has a wealth of talented artists and companies that currently make the local arts scene one of the most vibrant in the country -- Ballet Counterpointe aims to contribute to this lively community and to help get it on to the national radar.
Ballet Counterpointe is also working practically to create opportunities for artists and choreographers in real time, by providing mentorship and collaboration opportunities for both emerging and established artists. The company recognizes the difficulty that young artists face in the current dance landscape and aims to redress this through ongoing scholarship and personal mentorship programs. Future Pathways.
Ballet Counterpointe is always striving to push dance forward through innovative works that bring fresh art to the San Diego dance scene. With that in mind, Ballet Counterpointe aims to continue serving the area with regular programs of the highest caliber, as well as through educational opportunities for training dancers and choreographers and outreach opportunities for arts enthusiasts throughout the San Diego area.
